The 151-foot statue was a gift from the people of France to commemorate the American Revolution. Sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi depicted the goddess of Liberty with the torch of enlightenment stepping forward over the broken shackles of tyranny. The monument was dedicated in 1886 and welcomed by New York's first ticker-tape parade.
