A print of Prague/The City of Art, 1937, by Zdenek Rykr.
Zdenek Rykr was a prolific Czech artist whose work exemplifies a bold, individualistic modernist style intertwined with broad experimentation. He was best known for his package and logo designs for Orion, a popular Czech chocolate company, that are still in use today.
In 1937, Rykr designed a series of travel posters for the Ministry of Commerce and Czech Railways promoting various destinations within Czechoslovakia. Stylistically, they reflect the diversity of his artistic output, with several leaning on Surrealist-influenced imagery. This poster foregrounds Prague’s Charles Bridge while incorporating simple silhouettes of Lesser Town and the castle in the distance. Though the Baroque statues lining the Charles Bridge have been extensively studied, Rykr’s abstracted depiction makes this particular figure difficult to identify. Rather than rely on a literal interpretation, he captures a poetic twilight mood in this poster, evoking imagination rather than reality.
