A print of Ballets historiques du Marais, c. 1967, by Lefor-Openo.
This poster promotes a traveling ballet troupe led by Nadia Sauvage that specialized in the historic dances of the royal court of Louis XIV, known as the Sun King. Lefor-Openo incorporated celestial symbolism into the costume of the central figure in addition to other lavish period details.
The posters of postwar France rarely made plain its daunting economic challenges. Instead, advertising focused on producing bright, optimistic images that saturated streets with cute rather than with chaos. This trend was epitomized by a female design team known as Lefor-Openo (Marie-Claire Lefort and Marie-Francine Oppeneau), whose signature upbeat, cartoonish characters would become emblematic of French mid-century commercial and political advertising.
