This enamel pin features a detail from Wine Takes Revenge on the Drunkard, c. 1988, by an unknown designer.
In 1985 Mikhail Gorbachev mounted the last of several major anti-alcohol propaganda campaigns in the Soviet Union. This poster features a Russian translation of a quote from Leonardo da Vinci and is modeled after 18th-century lubok prints—folkloric woodblock prints that typically presented popular tales and religious stories.
Here a malignant Slavic spirit known as a chort is shown stealing the infant of a drunk woman. Chorts were often depicted convincing folk characters to sell their souls for something: money, power, love—or, in this case, booze.
