Bronisław Zelek was a Polish graphic designer and painter. He began his career as a poster designer, gaining fame in 1965 for his poster for Alfred Hitchcock’s film The Birds. Even then, his design methodology exemplified a playful use of type. He once remarked about himself, “The letter has been haunting me all my life, accidentally, actually I don’t know why.”

Later, Zelek became most notable as a type designer. He created a total of five typefaces that were used worldwide, particularly in the 1970s. His last, and most famous, typeface project was New Zelek, which was used in the 1980s by Microsoft for their logo and by Wiener Satdtwerke for their visual identity. In 2017, Marian Misiak in collaboration with Zelek created a digital version of New Zelek typeface.

This book is the result of Małgorzata Bartosik's great admiration for the designer and her discoveries of several experiments that strongly link his painting practice and his work as a designer.

Written by Małgorzata Bartosik with Herta Grimm. Published by Małgorzata Bartosik in 2023. Text in Polish and English. Paperback, measures 9.4 x 6.6 in, 256 pages.
