Our official exhibition poster for Act Black: Posters from Black American Stage & Screen on view at Poster House from March 13–September 6, 2026.
The poster features Cabin in the Sky, 1943, by Al Hirschfeld.
In 1943, Cabin in the Sky made history as the first major studio film with an all-Black cast since the release of The Green Pastures in 1936. The movie is based on the 1940 Broadway musical of the same name and tells the story of a gambler who is killed in a fight but resurrected by an angel and returned to Earth where he is given six months to redeem his soul and be sent to Heaven. Cabin in the Sky features some of the most notable Black musicians and actors of the era, including Louis Armstrong, Ethel Waters, and Lena Horne.
Illustrated by famed cartoonist Al Hirschfeld, the film's poster features Hirschfeld's characteristically expressive caricatures. The figure in the foreground wears a zoot suit, a wide-legged suit with a long jacket commonly worn by Black American scenesters and male comedians in the late 1920s and 1930s. The loose fit was also ideal for dancing to jazz music and was generally considered a truly American sartorial style.
