A magnet featuring Paris 16th Arrondissement, 1961, by Lefor-Openo.

The posters of postwar France rarely made plain its daunting economic challenges. Instead, advertising focused on producing bright, optimistic images that saturated streets with cute rather than with chaos. This trend was epitomized by a female design team known as Lefor-Openo (Marie-Claire Lefort and Marie-Francine Oppeneau), whose signature upbeat, cartoonish characters would become emblematic of French mid-century commercial and political advertising.

By the early 1960s, Lefor-Openo’s designs had taken a decidedly Pop-infused turn, showing more young, modern couples and fun, flirty women participating in cheeky scenarios to sell a mood. Their illustrations were so popular that they began creating commercial products ranging from postcards (including this design) to housewares, each featuring their signature spunky female protagonist.

Measures 3.5 x 2.5 inches.
