A collection of 4 magnets featuring vintage New York City travel ephemera designs.
The effectiveness of graphic design as a means of expressing the essence of New York City is demonstrated by the covers of books, maps, and brochures for its tourists. A photograph, while effective at representing a scene in a straightforward way, cannot have the multiple levels of interpretation that can be derived from strong graphic design. From the 1930s onward, train and shipping companies frequently used images from contemporary posters on their printed timetables and brochures as an effective way to reinforce their brands. Designs intended solely for the covers of brochures and pamphlets were also printed. By the 1960s, covers of maps and guidebooks to New York also began reflecting contemporary design elements, another indication that photography alone could not embody the distinctive character of the Wonder City.
