Made for Poster House's inaugural exhibition, Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouveau / Nouvelle Femme, this youth t-shirt features Mucha's 1902 poster for the British company Cycles Perfecta. In the early 1900s bicycles had recently emerged as a source of freedom, particularly for urban women who would often otherwise be accompanied or chauffeured. This new joy was perfectly encapsulated by Mucha’s image of a young woman with wildly flowing, untamed hair.
Alphonse Mucha was born in Moravia (present day Czechia) in 1860. He went to Paris in 1887 to work as an artist and illustrator, with modest success. All that changed in 1894 when he met the world famous actress Sarah Bernhardt. His poster designs for her established him as the defining voice of the Art Nouveau period. He went on to become internationally famous with his lush images featuring beautiful, modern women.
